What to Expect from Employment Agencies

You've applied for jobs before. You know how that works. They post a job somewhere and you send in a resume. They call you back and ask you to come in for an interview. You go and talk with the boss or other hiring manager. In a few days, hours, or even minutes sometimes, they tell you if you have the job. If you get the job, you start work at the agreed upon time. If you don't get the job, you try again with the next company. And the next. And then the next. That's not how it works with employment agencies.

What to Expect from Employment Agencies

Employment agencies work with two types of people. As the job seeker you are one type. The employment agencies also work with employers looking for crew members. The agency’s job is to make the connection between employers and crew members.

The employment agency service is free for job seekers. The company pays a fee to find employees. Hiring an employment agency saves the company time searching for good workers. A screening process finds the best candidates for the company’s open positions.

Step-by-Step How to Apply

You’ll submit your resume by email. A recruiter reviews your resume, usually within a business day of when you send it in. The recruiters have specialized experience with each trade.

When a recruiter sees you are a good candidate, you receive a call (or email or text) to schedule your interview. You meet with a recruiter to talk about the jobs available. Be sure to bring any trade ID or an original copy of your licence. Treat this like a job interview.

Once the interview with the recruiter is complete, you interview directly with the employer. It’s all set up by the employment agencies, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. You don’t need to contact the employer directly to set up your interview or even follow up to see if you got the job.

If the interview goes well and the employer would like to hire you, they tell the agency. Then, you receive an offer.

Temporary Positions

For temporary positions the process is streamlined. Usually there is no employer interview. After some initial screening through employment agencies, you are notified directly of work opportunities that match your skills.

Using employment agencies as a job seeker gives you access to many jobs that are never posted publicly. It is recommended that you continue your regular job search, too. But supplementing through registration with Skilled Trades Agency improves your odds of finding exactly the right job sooner.
